If you run Google Ads, you can see impressions, clicks, and form conversions. Phone calls are the gap: a visitor clicks your ad, picks up the phone, and the campaign gets no credit. This guide covers the main ways to close that gap and how call tracking software fits in.

Google documents its own call conversion options in its help centre; see About call conversion tracking. The notes below explain how those options relate to a call tracking platform.

The three kinds of call to track

Not every call from an ad starts the same way, so measure each separately:

  • Calls from the ad itself. Someone taps a call button on a mobile ad or a call asset without visiting your site.
  • Calls from your website after a click. Someone clicks the ad, lands on your page, then dials the number on it.
  • Calls from other sources that share a number. If one number is used for everything, ad calls get mixed in with organic and direct calls.

Method 1: Google’s own call reporting

Google Ads can report calls made directly from your ads and can track calls from your website using Google’s forwarding numbers. This is a good starting point if you only run Google Ads and want call counts inside the interface you already use. The trade-off is scope: you see calls attributed to Google Ads, but not how they compare with your other channels, and you do not get a transcript or summary of what was said.

Method 2: A call tracking platform with DNI

A call tracking platform adds a tracking number per source and uses dynamic number insertion to show the right number to each website visitor. Google Ads visitors see a number from the Google Ads pool, so every call from that pool is credited to paid search. The same system tracks your other channels, so you can compare them side by side. See how call tracking works for the mechanics.

In CallRing AI you create a source called Google Ads, attach numbers to it (or to a DNI pool), and optionally group them into a campaign to see spend, calls, and return per channel.

Getting call conversions back into Google Ads

Tracking calls is half the job. The other half is telling Google Ads which clicks led to a call, so bidding can optimize for phone leads. There are two common routes with CallRing AI:

To be clear about scope: CallRing AI does not currently list a native one-click Google Ads integration. Conversions reach Google Ads through GA4 or Tag Manager, as described above.
  • Google Analytics 4 key events. CallRing AI sends calls to GA4 as events. Mark them as key events and use them in your Google Ads and GA4 setup.
  • Google Tag Manager. Events are sent to your server-side container, where you can fire a Google Ads conversion tag when a call completes. See the Google Tag Manager integration.

A simple setup checklist

  • Create a Google Ads source and a tracking number or DNI pool for it.
  • Add the DNI script to your landing pages so paid visitors see a tracking number.
  • Send call events to GA4 or your GTM container.
  • Mark completed calls as key events or fire a conversion tag, and set a minimum call length so short calls do not count as leads.
  • Review calls weekly: use transcripts and summaries to see which keywords bring real enquiries.

Reading the results

Once calls flow in, compare cost per call across campaigns, then go one step further. With AI call summaries and CallScore, you can see which campaigns bring calls that are actually worth answering, not just calls. Link calls to deals and you can see revenue per source.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track phone calls from Google Ads for free?

Google Ads has its own call reporting at no extra charge. Cross-channel attribution, transcripts, and scoring need call tracking software; see our guide to free call tracking software.

Do I need call tracking if I only run Google Ads?

Not necessarily. Google’s reporting may be enough for call counts. You need call tracking when you want to compare Google Ads with other channels or read what was said on each call.

Will tracked calls show in GA4?

With CallRing AI, yes. Calls are sent to GA4 as events that you can mark as key events.
